These records consist partly of administrative papers, including constitution and by-laws, papers about the club's founding, minutes of executive committee meetings, and presidents' papers. Correspondence includes letters from prospective members, resignations, letters about deceased members, and from other organizations. Also minutes of annual and monthly meetings, programs, records of members' war activities, membership, scholarship, and financial records, and photographs of a club picnic.

The Society of Woman Geographers was established in 1925 at a time when women were excluded from membership in most professional organizations, such as the Explorers Club, who would not admit women until 1981. Patterned after the Harvard Travel Club, the Women's Travel Club was founded in 1935 for women who had taken unusual trips, "no cruises or casual tourists to be included." Its stated purpose was to help other women travelers. At monthly meetings, members give talks about their travels. During WWII the club loaned its travel films, photographs, and maps to the Office of Strategic Services, and since the war it has given travel grants to students.
